What is shoulder arthroscopy?

A camera and fine instruments are introduced into the shoulder area through small skin incisions. The structures treated depend on the condition diagnosed. The term arthroscopy describes the approach; it does not automatically mean the right treatment for every painful shoulder.

When may the procedure be considered?

One possible reason is a treatable rotator cuff tear. Pain when raising the arm alone is not enough to justify surgery. In so-called impingement, enlarging the space beneath the acromion is not automatically helpful. Examination, the course of symptoms and previous treatment therefore all inform the decision.

Examination and alternatives

We discuss how your pain developed, your mobility and your ability to bear loads. Depending on the clinical question, ultrasound, X-rays or MRI may be appropriate. Targeted exercise therapy and individually tailored pain management may also form part of treatment.

After surgery

Aftercare and the return to activity depend on the actual procedure. Tendon reconstruction requires different protection from a joint inspection alone. Possible risks, such as infection, restricted movement or persistent symptoms, are discussed in advance.
